VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMISSION

MAY 2, 2011

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES



1.      Call to Order: Bernie called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm.

2.      Roll Call:
        Present: Linda Carrasquillo, Kirk Allison, Bernie Corona, J. Roger Pelletier, Paul Barry
         Mary-Ann Roczynski, Dominic Fulco, Jr.

3.      Approval of Minutes:

        -       April 4, 2011 – Paul made a motion, seconded by Linda to approve the minutes. Mary-Ann abstained from the vote. Motion carried.   

4.      Old Business:
        -       Headstone Cleaner – It was reported that the Town received funds from D’Esopo’s to purchase the cleaner, and that Public Works staff would apply it to all headstones.  They will try to
                complete before Memorial Day.
        -       Sgt. Ford Dedication – Bernie informed the Commission that Patriotic Commission was going to get stone with inscription etched in.  Dedication ceremony to take place on the Sunday
                before Memorial Day at Bicentennial Square.

5.      New Business:
        -       Bernie passed out information he retrieved from the internet on various veterans issues.
        -       Dom expressed concern over how former Commissioner Stan deMello was treated by the EHHA because he is a veteran.  Inquired if there was something the Commission could do.              Chair Bernie said that it was out of purview for the Veteran’s Commission and said that it should be handled at the federal level.
        -       Paul explained to the Commission how the State Veterans Affairs reimburses veterans families for monuments and discussed issues with Soldier’s Field in Hartford.
        -       Summer Meetings – it was the consensus of the Commission that having meetings in the months of June-August would not be feasible because of everyone’s schedules.  Kirk made a          motion, seconded by Mary-Ann to cancel the meetings in June, July and August.  Motion carried.

6.      Adjournment – Paul made a motion, seconded by J. Roger Linda to adjourn the meeting.  Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:42 p.m.
